Hip Hop is not a culture

People are going to hate me for this, especially my industry associates, but what must be said, must be said. HIP-HOP is not a culture and it’s time we stop pretending like it is.

Before I break this thing down, allow me to preface by saying that I did enjoy what I did hear from the Migos “Culture” album. I hit play at the beginning and did not have any skips for the brief duration that I could sustain listening.

Now, allow me to use Migos as an example here simply because their album just released, it’s cliche and who provides a better example of anti-culture than the Migos?

Let’s do this REALLY simple:

“Fuckin’ on your bitch she a thot, thot, thot”

This is misogyny. As long as the woman has no value in your community, your culture has been destroyed. If the woman has no value, how can you expect a man to respect her? Child support and Planned Parenthood will gladly step in and profit.

“Cookin’ up dope in the crockpot”
“Cookin’ up dope with a Uzi”

These are felonies. Do you know about that Chicago Federal sweep that Trump wants to do? Yeah, that’s this. But you can’t clean a city without first cleaning the minds.

I know, I know. “Migos is just telling the story about how they came up”. Save it. We’ve been using that excuse forever – I’m tired of it. Fix it.

What is Culture, Ali?

I’m glad you asked.

The first definition is, the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively.

But I want you to look at the second definition: the cultivation of bacteria, tissue cells, etc., in an artificial medium containing nutrients.

You see, in regards to humanity, the first definition is incorrect. That’s not culture. The arts, music, and manifestations of human intellect are the peripherals or symptoms of culture. Not the culture itself.

It is the second definition which is real. Look at the prefix, CULT. From Latin cultus “care, labor; cultivation, culture; worship, reverence,” originally “tended, cultivated,”

In the second definition, they mention “nutrients” because this is where the cells GROW. They are CULTIVATED. If your culture does not help you grow, then you have no culture. HipHop is ANTI-culture.

HIP-HOP is NOT providing nutrients – it is providing poison.

Culture is your character, the Do’s and Don’ts of your people, the expectations from one another.

How do you treat your family? What does your family eat? How do they dress? What are their life expectations? How do they manage the family GENERATIONALLY? What are the life guidelines?

Answer these questions from the typical black American family and you’ll see we have no culture. Family respect is not what it once was. Our diets are the no. 1, 2, and 3 killer of our people. Our fashion is owned by our so-called oppressor and we flaunt it.

Our expectations are minimal. “He speaks so well”, they’ll say. Which shows how much we’ve lowered the bar if we must highlight something as simple and natural as our speech.

Where are the guidelines of the black family? What is acceptable and what is not acceptable? It is NOT as stringent as that of the Arab, Asian, or Jewish world.

And please don’t start that, “But white people” drivel. Again, we’re showing how much we’ve lowered the bar by comparing ourselves to the people we civilized. Do better. Raise the bar!

Free blacks are crying for freedom but what they need is independence. Has your culture taught you to grow your own foods? Make your own clothes? Generate an internal economy?

For example: If a Greek opens a restaurant, the necessities of that establishment will be purchased from a Greek. The money doesn’t leave the community.

Black culture is SPEND SPEND SPEND.

“I gave her 10 racks
I told her go shoppin’ and spend it all at the pop-up”

$10,000 right out the window – and to who? Your so-called oppressor. Great job, genius! ????

Is your culture productive or destructive? Because Hip-Hop is destructive – for the most part.

The level of a people will rise no higher than the music they listen to. (tweet this quote)

Music is one of the most powerful forces known to man. The subconscious ramifications of the messages you feed the mind are breathtaking.

In regard to the subconscious mind; What you feed it will breed it. (tweet this quote)

And it’s not our minds I’m concerned about. It’s the youth because monkey sees, monkey do. And they are too naive and inexperienced to discern right from wrong. I see them emulating dysfunction and I’m disgusted.

Once upon a time, Hip-Hop was a culture. Hip-Hop was Hotep. It has since been hijacked and packaged in a for-profit industry where the ONLY thing that does matter is the profits.

We need to demand substance back into our music otherwise you’ll see a cycle of STUCK.

  1. I saw the title of this article and I was instantly offended, I proceeded to read it with the intention to pick it apart. But then something happened. You made perfect sense and provided a logical argument and I can find no fault in your observations. But I still love hip-hop. I used to listen to what some people call “real” hip-hop, and abhor the mainstream, but I refuse to categorize sub-genre’s in that judgmental way anymore. Now I embrace all music that sounds dope and resonates with me. I’ve been looking forward to this Migos album because they make easily accessible music that is fun to listen to, and music is supposed to be entertaining, which the Migos most certainly are. But your concerns are still very much real. Being a hip-hop artist myself, I’m inevitably influenced by the music I listen to. So I’ve noticed that while my own music has technically gotten better, the content has more or less “dumbed-down” since I started listening to more mainstream or trap artists, in comparison with my old work which was much more philosophical, but not quite professional. I don’t know what we should about this whole thing, but the issue of the effects of the media we consume upon our subconscious is something that I’ve thought about for awhile, and it deserves real scientific research.

  2. OK – Project – take all these factors of data from the past 50 years, and map the data on the same chart — availability of abortion, black infant mortality rate, black NFL/NBA viewers over time, popularity of hip hop, average black american IQ, rate of black graduates/doctors, Gang related gun murder rate, Teen pregnancy rate, Average abortion rate.

I wonder what trends you will notice.

  3. I’m white and I’m impressed with this Hotep movement which I had never heard about until I saw Uncle Hotep’s videos and it led to me finding your channel and website. It’s great to see people promoting independence and skill building rather than blaming others. It’s great to see people reject the victim mentality.

I support what you’re doing 100% and will share your videos with people who may be receptive.
