Should you fake it ’til you make it?

You’ve heard this phrase plenty of times and people on both sides of the spectrum can argue for or against. Today, I’m going to explain why you should “fake it ’til you make it’.

Firstly, I’d like to preface by saying that I don’t like this phrase – fake it. Because I believe that one is not exactly faking it. If it is the person you truly want to be, how is that fake? Maybe it’s fake to others who know the you that live in THEIR world (mind) – but do they know the you that lives in the future world – or in your mind?

“What you want to be is who you are – you just haven’t finished transforming yet.” [tap here to tweet this quote]

In a TedTalks by Amy Cuddy she explains how by simply changing your posture you can affect your attitude. Not only that, there were also biological effects. “Power-posers showed an 8% increase in testosterone, low-power posers had a 10% decrease in the hormone.”

Psycologicalscience.org did a study on smiling and found that people who smiled “had lower heart rate levels after recovery from the stressful activities”. As a kid, when I felt down, I’d look in the mirror (with all the tears in my eyes) and force myself to smile. It actually did make me feel better – although sometimes only marginally.

Psychologist Professor Richard Wiseman tested a theory on faking romance. What did he find?

Under the normal speed dating behavior, around 20% of volunteers indicated that they wanted to see one another again but playing the psychological games more than doubled the success rate to 45%.

As you might already be aware, dressing the part will make you ready for the part. Hajo Adam & Adam D. Galinsky’s study tested attentiveness when one wore a lab coat versus when one did not. They found that “attention did not increase when a lab coat was not worn but only increased when the coat was worn.”

Imagine the person you’d like to be – even emulate someone who’s in a position you want to be. Adopt the speech, attitude and even the work ethic of this perceived “idol”. When I’m vibrating low and feeling negative or when someone agitates me, I say to myself “How would Socrates respond?”

I emulate the masters that have come before me. In business, I may emulate “The Wolf of Wall Street”. Every once in a while when I’m not feeling motivated I’ll watch it again or scenes from “Boiler Room”.

When I coach my kids’ soccer team, I try to emulate Phil Jackson because of his zen-like methods. His calmness and ability to coach without the excessive screaming (I’m a screamer coach – ha!) is admirable.

On my quest for success, I study the people that are successful like Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, Diddy, and Peter Thiel. They all have one thing in common. They are up before the sun. So, I adopted and adapted this to my lifestyle.

We must envision our ideal state, final form, and desired outcome. Anything that manifests physically must first manifest mentally. Before you create something with your hands, you think about it first, don’t you?

And let us not forget about “the placebo effect” – where the mind is tricked to believe something is real when in fact it is not. In one study involving asthma, people using a placebo inhaler did no better on breathing tests than sitting and doing nothing. But when researchers asked for people’s perception of how they felt, the placebo inhaler was reported as being as effective as medicine in providing relief.

The mind is the controller of our reality. The only reality that exists is the one created in our minds. The totality of the mentality of humanity is what creates the loving and chaotic world we live in today.

The media will implant programs in the minds of the public which can actually make particular events occur. Robert Merton, in 1948 coined the term “self-fulfilling prophecy” (SFP) also known as “Oedipus effect”.

This is a false definition of a situation evoking a new behavior which makes the originally false conception come true. You see, the world we live in, when compared to the etheric world (which governs it) is illusory.

Our world or reality can be bent and shape-shifted at our will. All we need to do is BELIEVE. So, let us not say “FAKE IT ’til you make it” because our thoughts and desires are not fake at all. They are more “real” than anything we can touch.

Friends and family will go out of their way to discourage you – everyone will. Why? Because they are afraid that you will actually become the person they are too lazy or too afraid to be. They are afraid that your success will amplify their inadequacy and insecurity.

That’s why it’s important to surround ourselves with people that are already successful because they will not be subject to envy.

Now think and propser. But most importantly, don’t forget to act on your thoughts. The universe won’t help you until you actually start moving. God only helps those who help themselves.

  1. Great article from Ali Shakur. The reason this article spoke to me so much is that I have been both directly and indirectly bending reality to my will. It started in November when I began really applying my mind to what I wanted.

At the time I felt stuck in the city I was in. I had quit my job months earlier but my new business required me to take care of 3 properties 6 days a week. I made the decision that no matter what happened, I was going to move to Los Angeles in 4 months.

Within one day of making that decision the opportunity to move to LA presented itself. Now as I write this I am living in LA living each day as I want. No boss or 9-5 job. Don’t get me wrong I’m not making big money (yet) but I am however living on my terms.

Read this article and really apply certain key points. Your mind is everything.

    Regards,
    Dylan Madden
